About Us

The Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis at UCSF is a strong international force improving the quality of life for people with the world's number one crippling disease.

Countless individuals are living lives with greater mobility and less pain, thanks to research supported by the Center. Specifically, the Center directs contributions from donors to priority investigations conducted by biomedical scientists on the faculty of the UCSF Division of Rheumatology, which is consistently ranked among the top two or three arthritis research groups in the world.

The Center also supports UCSF's postdoctoral education program for physicians in training to become rheumatologists, many of whom become arthritis researchers. This rheumatology fellowship program is among the world's largest in terms of its number of alumni.

The United States Congress established the Center at UCSF in 1978 to posthumously honor the stage and film actress who almost single-handedly focused the nation's attention on the seriousness of the disease. In having the courage to publicly share her personal struggle with severe rheumatoid arthritis and by serving on a landmark presidential commission, Rosalind Russell helped pave the way for the major worldwide research effort that continues today.

The Rosalind Russell Medical Research Center for Arthritis operates under the auspices of the UCSF Foundation, a public benefit corporation. The Center's activities are directed by a board of volunteers:
